UK Interest Rates Predictions for 2025

What Will Happen With UK Interest Rates in 2025

As of January 2025, major commentators have expectations. They believe the Bank of England (BoE) will gradually reduce interest rates throughout the year.

Bear in mind though, the extent and pace of these cuts remain subjects of debate and uncertainty.

With this in mind, here are some views from different industry commentators.

Please bear in mind that these are comments only and not any assurance or guide as to what will happen.

What Are The Views?

Analysts at Fidelity International project that rates may decrease to approximately 4.23% by the end of 2025, with the BoE likely implementing reductions in 0.25 percentage point increments.

Similarly, FXOpen suggests that interest rates could stabilise around 3.7% during 2025, contingent upon sustained reductions in inflation and economic adjustments to prior monetary policy shifts.

However, some experts advise caution. Refinitiv’s analysis indicates that while a 25 basis point cut may occur in February, it could be the only reduction this year, depending on economic conditions.

The London School of Economics highlights challenges such as wage pressures and global economic uncertainties. These challenges could influence the BoE’s decisions. This influence may potentially affect the anticipated trajectory of interest rate cuts.

One comment from The LSE mentions that the overall picture of the UK economy;

…seem to imply that UK inflation will continue to rise much above the two per cent target throughout 2025. If this turns out to be the case, it makes sense for the BoE’s MPC to keep interest rates on hold for most of 2025…

In summary, a consensus exists that UK interest rates are likely to decline in 2025. The specific timing and magnitude of these reductions will depend on various economic factors. These factors include inflation trends, wage growth, and global economic developments.

All Clear Now?

The short summary is that there is no consensus on interest rates. Every expert has a different view. I was once told that if you line up every economist you find head to toe, they still won’t reach a conclusion. Probably truer now than ever.

In terms of borrowing, make your own choices and base it on your own affordability. At the moment we are seeing commercial and development lenders remain active and keen to lend.

Don’t wait for cheaper lending costs if it means missing an opportunity. Significantly lower interest rates may not be any nearer.
